Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln is the most famous example of the "American dream". Many Americans think that in their country a man may rise from the lowest to the highest position in their land. That was exactly what Lincoln did.

He was born in 1809 in a small farm in Kentucky. When Abraham was quite young, the family moved to the wild forest land of Indiana. He hardly had any education; he only learned to read and write and do simple arithmetic. In 1830 Abraham left his father's farm and went to Springfield, Illinois. There he became a clerk in a store and worked hard to improve his education. In 1836 he became a lawyer.

He entered politics, too, and in 1834 became a candidate to the Parliament of Illinois. He soon became a force in the political life. In 1847 he went as a Congressman to the National Assembly (National Parliament).

Slavery was then becoming a burning question in American politics. Many people in the Northern states waited to abolish it; the Southern states opposed the abolition. The Southerners said that it weald mean economic rain for them. The reason was mat the prosperity of the South was based on cotton-growing, and only Negroes worked there. The Southerners threatened that if the North didn't cease its fight against slavery, the Southern states would leave the Union. They wanted to form an independent "Confederacy".

In 1860 Lincoln was elected President of the USA. In 1861 seven states left the Union and elected their own President, Jefferson Davis. The Confederacy was formed.

Lincoln was strongly against slavery and even more strongly against the break-up of the Union. In 1862 the American Civil War between the Norm and the South began.

At first the war went badly for the North. The Southerners headed by General Robert Lee and Colonel Jackson won some brilliant victories. But Lincoln did not lose courage. On April, 9 General Lee surrendered. The Civil War was over. Lincoln tried to convince former enemies mat they should live in peace.

On April, 14 the President and his wife visited a theatre in Washington. During the performance Lincoln was shot by an actor who supported Confederacy. Abraham Lincoln died next morning.

People admire Lincoln for political moderation. They admire him because he tried to preserve the nation. He is a symbol of American democracy.

My english became worse again. It's pitty, but everything that I can do is to try to improve it. I need more practice in writting. I think I should write here about my life or something interesting in city or in the world. I don't want to go to native english blog, I prefer to keep everything in one place. May be it will be boring for you and, of course, my notes will contain a lot of mistakes.
Today I visited a meeting of the English-Book club. It was organized by BKC-school. It was free and you didn't have to be a pupil of this school to attend. The meeting was held in a café in Moscow. The discussion is on the book "The Red Bandge of Courage" by S. Crane. It's a real story about the Civil War in the USA. It was a war between the South and the North, between the Confederacy and the Union. The story is not about great battles, generals of the Armies, or Linkoln. It is about a Union soldier who went to the war as a volunteer. He was very naive and proud of himself before going to the war. He wanted to show off to those people who stayed home. He had realised very soon that war wasn't romantic and he began to have doubts about himself in his first battle. Henry understoond that he could run away from the battlefield. The main part of the book concerns this moral problem. When the first battle started, Henry left his position. Afterward he tried to justify himself. He didn't feel shame or guilt, but he was frightened by the thought that his friends might know about his cowardice. Accidentally, Henry got a wound on his head. So, other soldiers didn't ask him any questions about his absence during the battle. Actually, he became a brave soldier in the subsequent battles. We can say that the ending is positive.
When I read this book I was surpriesed that officers didn't punish deserters severely. When officers saw soldiers running away, they only beat those soldiers. There weren't any prison or military courts for them in the USA Army. I recalled Stalin's order during the battle of Stalingrad: "Let no one step back" and ordered officers to kill retreating soldiers. It's a cruel and disgusting episode in our history. Sometimes we must think and remember old mistakes to prevent new ones.

Are you still alive,
So am I. Hello тебе, hello!
Let it flow all over your избушка
Evening свет in our big село.

I've been told,
Miss me шибко under lonely moon,
In old-fashioned second-hand

And you see в вечернем синем мраке
(I can't take. Holy Cow. Oh, Gosh!)
That somebody

But relax,
This is only тягостная бредь.
I am not a stupid alcoholic,

I am still такой же очень нежный,
And I dream, my darling,
I return t

I'll be back,
Our garden,
But I beg you, mama,
Wake me not like

Do not wake
Don't excite
Слишком early losses and усталость
To experience

Do not teach me how to pray.
To the old возврата больше нет.
You're my only помощь and отрада,
You're my only несказанный свет.

So forget about your тревога,
Не грусти and I shall come back soon.
Do not go so often to дорога
In old-fashioned second-hand

Est Deus in nobis
